HANASE HIGHLAND INN
The name “Hanase Highland Inn” pays tribute to our home set deep in the mountainous region of Hanase tucked behind Kyoto city, and to Simon’s heritage and the Scottish highlands.
135 years (circa) ago the house complex was built for a wealthy timber merchant family living in the area, and kindly sets the mood for what would have been albeit a rural but affluent Japanese lifestyle.
The house has also been recognised as a heritage – listed building.
AN HOUR FROM KYOTO. A WORLD AWAY.
Nestled in a sleepy hamlet surrounded by forest and river Hanase Highland Inn is an historic timber and tile construction featuring both traditional and Western furnishings with tatami matted flooring. Here you will experience Japanese style in contemporary comfort.
TRADITIONAL OKUDOSAN
Central focus of the kitchen is the beautiful ‘OKUDOSAN’ or wood fired stove, where the harvested soy beans and rice were once prepared. You then continue up into the irori, or open hearth room, where once not so long ago the kettle was boiled for tea and grilling the fresh fish caught from the river.
